General Information

Information about minimum coverage requirements:

The Affordable Care Act established guaranteed access to health care coverage to everyone regardless of pre-existing health conditions as well as the requirement that U.S. citizens be insured or pay a penalty. Exemptions to the individual mandate are granted for financial hardship, religious objections, to American Indians, to those without coverage for less than three months, undocumented immigrants, incarcerated individuals, those for whom the lowest cost plan option exceeds 8 percent of an individuals income, and those with incomes below the tax filing threshold (in 2009 the threshold for taxpayers under age 65 was $9,350 for singles and $18,700 for couples). Minimum essential coverage includes health plans available on the Healthplanfinder website, other individual market policies, job-based coverage, Medicare, Washington Apple Health(Medicaid), TRICARE and certain other coverage.
